Powder coating wheels

Chatting with a friend the other day, he reccommended painting wheels over powder coating. If paint chips you can touch it in or get it blown over easily enough, and modern two pack is pretty much as hard & resilient as powder coating.

Poweder coating is not very resilient when caught by a tyre changer, and also once chipped allows water in underneath so the finish blisters or the metal corrodes.

You also tend to get a much nicer finish with paint, with more effects available, if you want really sparkly/shiny wheels.

Tends to cost a bit more than powder coating though ......

My Marchesinis were powercoated by Griffs in Bristol 2 years ago and after numerous tyre changes are still mint. It depends on where you get your tyres done, the guy I use has all the correct protective equipment for doing bike wheels and hasn't chipped any of my wheels, he does a lot of work for another guy who uses some hideously expensive billet wheel from the states and hasn't damaged any of those either. Go to somewhere that specialises in motorcycle powercoating rather than some industrial monkey.
You get what you pay for, my Marchesinis cost £120 to have the pair done pearlescent white, I had a customer bring me some that he had done local at a cost of £30 per wheel and I then had to spend an hour chasing out all the disc bolt thraeds and cleaning all the disc faces and bearing seats where the idiots hadn't masked them off.

i found that first choice masked off all the threads and bearing housings.

they do alot of work for the local 'chapter' so are very particular on their work quality if you know what i mean

Do first choice in exter offer sand blasting and powder coating, or do i need to take my stuff else where?

My subframe paint has starting peeling off and the metal rusting so i thought i'd get it blasted and powder coated silver.

p.s any idea how much it would cost to get a subframe powder coated?

I have talked to lots of peps that do p/coating and am going to leave it till the winter and take them to 1st Choice.
