vtr susp. settings

Post by gsxrandy »

Hi guys, i have a techy question. I have a 98 VTR fitted with a Nitron rear shock and i was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the setup and how to adjust it properly. My s/absorber has a remote canister with an adjuster on the end, is this bump or rebound, there is also a rotary adjuster down by the lower mount point. The bike at the moment has a habit of bouncing badly at the rear when hard cornering. Any help would be appreciated.
cheers,
Andy.
ps. i havent had it apart to see if the spring rate is right for my weight.

If it is the same as my Ohlins then the compression damping is the adjuster on the remote res and the rebound damping is the adjuster at the bottom of the shock, it sounds like the rebound damping needs to be increased, don't go too far though as you can easily end up with the shock 'ratcheting' itself down when the rebound damping is too high the shock doesn't have time to fully extend before the next bump and ends up getting 'ratcheted' down as the next compression acts on it. If winding the reound up doesn't cure the problem then it may indicate that the shock is in need of a service and re-oil. I use a chap called Perry Leask at HM racing he is very good and is an Ohlins and White Power technician.

Thanks for the info m8. I had a play with it today and found the spring was wound down very tight so the shock was working against the stop all the time. slackened off the spring 5 turns, now have some movement on the shock so will play with some settings tomorrow on a rideout. must have been set for a 20 stone guy with passenger. Give me a F3000 car to setup anyday , far easier with a computer and weightscales

All sorted now, went for a blast to Lyme on sunday morning and the bike has been transformed. I now have adjustment range that i can feel on corners so will play with more next time out. Great brekkie at Lyme with the gang from Total Triumph, thanks for leading Craig, great route.
