City of London is bad for anything that runs on fuel, but there is some mega wheelie roads on the outskirts....

Whats wrong with london, its pimp. I live just outside, 30 mins from waterloo by train. Had coffee the other day and saw some chelsea football gays chilling out as they train about 500 metres from my joint.

People are there for bascially 1 reason, to make money and they work hard for it,very hard.

My full working day is 15 hours of work(12 hours,4 on,4 off) and travelling(3 hours there and back) and if anyone holds me up, they get lip....

This kind of attitude does not exist back in the South-West.

Thats cos a normal SW workday consists of 8hr working then 2Hrs stuck behind a tractor! Means you learn to chill out and enjoy the scenery !

I spent 3 years riding in London and surrounding area everyday as a courier. Brilliant job in the summer but totally shite in winter. Although now it's pretty much been killed off by loads of brazilians coming over here on CG125s and undercutting everyone, the distance work is still there, but all the city circuit work just doesn't pay well enough. I've still got mates riding up there, but many are looking to get out when the reccession is finished. The life expectancy isn't great either, avarage is around 18 months before having a serious injury. I had plenty of smashes with cars and vans and myopic pedestrians steeping off the back of buses into traffic up there. Would I do it again? Sure if I was a lot younger, the advances in riding gear over the last 20 years or so have been amazing, so winter should be fairly comfortable other than the road surfaces. There's nothing worse than riding back a couple of hundred miles in the pisssing rain knowing that you ain't gonna get home for another 3 or 4 hours, and whinging receptionists moaning when you drip water all over their desks.

I agree. I grew up there. With the exception of being able to get anything at anytime of day or night just a telephone call away I cannot really think of any redeeming features.

Many people there are hard working, but it's also a magnet for scum who prey on the decent people. Same with any big city I know.

No, that's an excuse - not a reason. The whole South East has a rush-rush, must get there first kind of attitude bred in. It's uneccesary, and doesn't in itself create money ..... many big companies have realised that it isn't essential to being successful hence many have de-camped the capital to other parts of the country - whether that be down here or places like Manchester, etc., .... heck our lot are going to Milton Keynes

As for the working hours - that only averages out at a 40hr week over the course of the year - better than many because you only work 50% whereas most people who work those hours in a 5 day week are working 70% of the year And you can't tell me working security is hard ....

I know a couple of people who work out of Heathrow Spent 9 months near there living in sunny Bedfont - didn't like it, came back here

The "good" areas are dirtier and scummier than the worst parts of Exeter (Sidwell Street is actually quite clean and pleasant), and the bad areas make you want to slit your wrists after an hour or two. Everyone looks so bloody miserable all the time and the people, by and large, are arseholes. Even the simplest aspects of life (like getting anywhere or parking) become blood-pressure raising chores and my corner of it has, over the years, turned into something resembling the [bar steward] child of Calcutta and Tehran. Nothing on earth could entice me to live there again.

If the weather wasn't crap, it would be pretty much perfect down here.

I do miss proper summers. In London it gets stupidly hot for about six weeks a year, and it's a lot drier and sunnier. In August I was visiting for a week and we had five consecutive days of 35 degree weather.

That's basically all I miss though. And even if you can be bothered to travel 50 miles to get to any sort of countryside, it's all flat and boring so it's much harder to appreciate summer anyway.

I just don't really get why people love the place so much. Or the sheer number of people who have pretty much never ventured outside the M25. Or why people come from all over the world to live there, only to be permanently miserable.

Working this job is by far the hardest civvy Job I've ever had.....

The hours aren't the problem but dealing with problems at work is the ball breaker.....

London is a crazy place, a mix of everything....

I think actually living in London itself would be a nightmare but living 11 miles outside is perfect....Everything/anything is close like Bladerunner said and even countryside is closer than 50 miles I think. Not dissagrering with Jam as obviously he knows the area better than me but the Farncombe area near guildford is quite country....Country enough for me anyways.

I used to live not too far from you, I was in Woking for a few years, before moving down here when I landed a teaching post at a local college. Woking was ok it was far enough out to be reasonably peacefull with some nice countryside nearby, Horsell common where the Martians landed in HG Wells War of the worlds, but near enough to get in for a night out only 25 mins into Waterloo by train. I lived in London itself for a good few years, but as Bladerunner says once the novelty of being able to get pizza and fags at 4am has worn off, it is a shitty place to live.
