Info for France trip 2013.

Post by Red5 »

Thanks for all turning up this eve.
After a constructive meet this eve, we have come up with a suggested route to the B&B. Hopefully the link to the Google maps will work. It sais 3hrs 55minms but we will be on bikes so should make mince meet of that time and a route encompassing a bit of everything, mile munching auto routes mixed with plenty of fun road action
176miles / 283Km. They use Km's over there as well as driving on the wrong side of the road.

To re cap

we are sailing Poole / Cherbourg 19th August 0830hrs, need to be there at least an hr before then to book in, customs, etc. Please turn up fully fuelled so we can head straight off when we dock on the other side.

I'll be leaving Exeter 0530, allowing 2 hrs to cruise to Poole. Time for coffee and if anything does go wrong en route.

On the other side, ferry lands at 1345 local time so have any lunch on the boat then pending customs etc straight onto the fun roads.

Fuel, toilet stops as and when but looking at Granville for first break.

I will put up a list on this thread of what we should each carry stating which are legal requirements and which are recommended by people like the AA / RAC (Other motoring organisations are available) This list will be for you to decide what to do, but it will be there to read, use or ignore as you choose as individuals.

Routes etc when there, we will pick the brains of our hosts who are very experienced and knowledgeable of routes, where, when, what to see and do.

Return route, depending how we all feel but we will need to be at Cherbourg 23rd August 1745hrs at the latest for the 1845hrs sailing to Poole. Where we arrive 2200hrs, from there all head home with who ever's going which way. Hopefully most iof us will have someone to ride with at least most of the way back to theirs. Going to be late but will worth the effort.

Catch you all later guys...

Nick

I'll be taking my bike over on the ferry in my van as I will be staying-on in France to go to Paris on business before getting on track at Magny Cours for a few days.

You can all stick your luggage in the van for the trip from Cherbourg to the B&B

Anyone taking a pillion who'd like to drive my van to the B&B so that I can ride?

On that trip down where you cut across the D72 , from the D650 to the D900 above lessay that is a horrible shitty little road if i remember correctly, having been diverted across it a few times in the truck , when the fair is on at Lessay, It is better to follow the D650 down to the next junction D378/D352 and cut across it is a lot quicker and brings you out just the other side of Lessay ,

dunno that bit Merv - we always used to stay on the 650 as far south as possible ...... but, it's only a couple of miles, and we'll be on bikes rather than a big truck ....... :D

yes we used to follow the D650 down and cut across by the D437, also if you wanted to avoid the motorway bit below avranches turn off on the N175 then take the D40 then pick up the D175 further up , that is a road we used to run before the A84 opened , but there are no Peages on that section of A84, just watch for dark blue Scoobies ,(subarus) the gendarmes use em on the A roads over there now

OK kiddy-winks, for those that haven't done so yet, EHIC cards can be applied for/renewed FREE online HERE: https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/startApplication.do" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; 8)

Note, they say allow 10 working days, so you need to do it this week to be safe .....
