The one good thing of someone moving over in front of you is at least you know THEY know you're there! That said, I'd rather they stayed put, the gravel and dust kicked up from the kerbside isn't especially welcome

If I have to explain, you'll NEVER understand
Re: Overtaking inside the white line
3 points and £60! Ker-ching! Some of the solid lines are so worn, that at 120 you can't tell that they are solid until you're on top the bloody things
Re: Overtaking inside the white line
Very true, ive often been behind a car and the driver is completely unoblivious to the fact that he/she has rear view mirrors!!Smiler wrote:The one good thing of someone moving over in front of you is at least you know THEY know you're there! Like you say, not deemed biker etiquette but quite true that a good rider(what, who ever that might be) will pass when it's safe to do so.Bullet wrote:Im a bikers worst nightmare cos i NEVER move in to allow bikes past!!! If its safe to do so then they can filter past me when its safe!! ive lost count the amount of times ive watched cars/vans/truck pull right in against the kerb to allow bikes past!! Unfortunately ive also seen a few near misses as they almost hit a cyclist who is filtering up the inside in slow moving traffic!!
May not be the biker Etiquette to sit in teh middle of my lane but om sure a decent rider can pass when its safe to do so, legally and without csuing a hazard to other road users.
Re the whole over taking thing... yes, you might do it but would you do the same over take or manoeuvre if a police car /bike was behind you or coming the other way?? If not, have to ask, why not... They'll pull you if they deem it dangerous for you or others. I'm no angel
Don't care who you are, how much you have, how powerful you are. You still sit on the toilet with your pants around your ankles. Yep, it's a level playing field..

It is ILLEGAL to overtake any vehicle when there is a solid white line, whether you cross the line or not. The solid line means NO OVERTAKING, not 'do not cross'.
The only time you are allowed to overtake, is if the vehicle you are overtaking is doing less than 20mph, & it is safe to do so.

Sorry, but you are completely wrong.
From the direct Gov website:"Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.
Laws RTA 1988 sect 36 & TSRGD regs 10 & 26"
And RoSPA guidance note (can't access Highway Code online)
"Rule 165 of the Highway Code states that
You MUST NOT overtake:
- if you would have to cross or straddle double white lines with a solid line
nearest to you (but see Rule 129 which states that that you may cross the solid white line, “provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cyclist, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less)
- if you would have to enter an area designed to divide traffic, if it is surrounded
by a solid white line
- the nearest vehicle to a pedestrian crossing,
especially when it has stopped to let pedestrians
cross
- if you would have to enter a lane reserved for buses,
trams or cycles during its hours of operation
- after a ‘No Overtaking’ sign and until you pass a sign
cancelling the restriction"
So you CAN overtake a vehicle in an area with the solid line nearest you, given certain circumstances as above. Note, however, there is nothing stated about filtering, and certainly no max/min speed given should you choose to do so ......
Of all the things I have ever lost, I miss my mind the most .....

Re: Overtaking inside the white line
Fair do's, that may be the case, but it isn't a "legal document" in the same way as the Road Traffic Act or even the Highway Code

Highway Code is a guide to the rules of the road. Most of it is NOT law. Good luck overtaking where a solid white line is present on your side of the carriageway.scorcher wrote:.......................May need to read a copy of the highway codemightybluesteve wrote:It is ILLEGAL to overtake any vehicle when there is a solid white line, whether you cross the line or not. Re: Overtaking inside the white line
Done a weekend with Avon and Somersets boys in blue, and they tell you as part of the course that its perfectly legal to overtake as long as you don't cross the solid white line closest to you as per the highway code. If you're going to the NEC bike show, sit in with the bike safe cops up there, when they're covering overtaking, and they'll tell you exactly the same. (I know as I answered that very question the year before lastmightybluesteve wrote:Highway Code is a guide to the rules of the road. Most of it is NOT law. Re: Overtaking inside the white line
I apologise, I was wrong.
You are allowed to overtake in the presence of a solid white line as long as you don't cross it.
The information I'd received came from MCN a while back.
I hate being wrong, but love learning.
Ride safe.
