as a slight aside, as I always understood it, a solid white line doesnt mean no overtaking it means your not allowed to cross the white line so providing you have sufficient room you can still overtake ....just not cross the line (so say a bike could overtake a bike , or on a wide enough road with solid lines you occasionally have enough room to legally overtake cars - not often mind as they tend to be narrower roads and squeezing past with only a 2cm to spare between your bar end and car wing mirrors doesnt count as a resaonable amount of room )
I beleive you are quite correct jason, certainly that was my understanding of the law
Likewise you can filter/catch up with the lead vehicle of a queue, but should not pass it within zig-zag lines
Of all the things I have ever lost, I miss my mind the most .....
Handle stressful situations like a dog - If you can't eat it or play with it, pee on it and walk away
it happened along one of those roads that you go along millions of times and not once have you ever seen anyone turn down those roads but the day u decide to filter.... sods law or murpheys law u decide
have found out that filtering is completely legal in terms of the highway code and in the eyes of the police, but it is open to attack from the other parties insurance for drivers negligence. its one of those things when you say....'yeh its legal but.....'
so in terms of me insurance said the most probable outcome would have been 50:50 and a potential write off of to my bike. made sense to me to deal with it privately as its all cosmetic, but the other party being b'stards had to give them a 'contribution'. and the cheeky buggar said to me 'are you happy with this don't want to make u do something ur not happy with'. thought like saying of course not....... etc but hey sh1te happens
I recently did a bikesafe day with the local Police motorcyclists.
Their view was in town travelling at 20mph your filtering and at 30mph your overtaking.
The original post doesn't say whether the car driver was indicating or not prior to turning right.
ultimately an expensive lesson with the only winner being the insurance robbers.

i never said it was in town, it was up a long hill thats always in use so its not like its a quite road, dont think i actually mentioned what hill its marldon hill in paignton got to the long straight - thats when i started to overtake.
never saw any indicators witness (car behind) said that she put indicators at short notice and he was following too close nd covered up the rear lamp cluster.
but yes lesson has been learned.... take riding with MORE caution !

My mistake I read Marlden Hill in Paington and not knowing the area at all I figured it was in town.
Jason, have you done a bikesafe day? I found it to be interesting and certainly not a Police PR day. In fact other than pointing out why they where doing Bikesafe they never actually mentioned the Police at all unless asked direct questions about their role. It was totally about the riding and the system that they use on the road.
They made it quite clear that you can take as much or as little from the day as you like but for me it was well worth the effort.
