I smoked for 23 years and stopped on 2nd Jan 2000.

Every time I want a ciggy (and I still do!) I imagine having to tell my kids that dad's not going to be around because he's got lung cancer.

Bit heavy I know but it works a treat for me, brings me out in a cold sweat just typing it.

Good luck mate :( :(

I would be worried If I had to tell my kids that I have Lung cancer................as I aint any kids.

on a serious note I do need to quit as I have been smoking for over 20 years but if I quit I will be worried about my weight

I have stopped on a few occasions now for periods of weeks or months or even a whole year once, i find the nicorette gum worked for me most of the time but get the Nicorette freshmint gum in the 4mg size, i used to get through about 6 pieces a day and you get 105 pieces for £16. Don't get the mint ones they taste like rubber but the freshmint have a chewing gum type coating and taste like normal chewy but a bit peppery to start with. One thing i have found is that your life has to be relatively settled, any trouble going on in the background about anything just makes it harder and after a row you make any excuse to go out and buy some secret fags. Remove all fag related things from the house as its too much of a temptation, after i had stopped a year i was playing pc games very late one night and for some reason looked in a drawer and in there was some papers and a bit of dessicated baccy but it was a cracking buzz but after that it was all downhill again. They reckon you have more energy after a while but all i did was want to sleep a lot but if your sleeping your not smoking i suppose. Good Luck m8 just ignore those poxy helplines, a waste of time its all down to you.........

PS i gained over a stone because i found that the worst time is after a meal so if you make the meal last all night then no worries :D :D

not me personally but anther guy off another forum wrote this when alpslapper was trying to give up

16th January 1981 at approx 4:35 PM. Thats when I quit.

A tool salesman , came to visit me in work and I commented that I hadn't seen him for a while. He told me he had been in hospital with a chest problem and went on to describe the ward he had been nursed in. !!!!!!
A specialist chest ward in the old Kilmarnock Imfirmary, and how 95% of people in there were in for smoking related issues. He described lying in the middle of the night behind his wee curtain , listening to the wheezing and laboured breathing going on round about him and how often the sound would suddenly stop and the next sound was the sound of a trolley being wheeled in !!!!!!

I pulled a packet of Dunhill out of my overall pocket and crushed it into a bin there and then , and went home and got my old bicycle out the shed !! Never looked back.

You just need the right moment and the right trigger to make it an effective quit for ever.

The inhaler worked for me, Cost about £20 for a load of capsules to put in it, but felt like you had a ciggie in ya mouth which is more effective, Half the time i never had a nicotine capsule in it. After 8 weeks i kicked the habit, Its also a bonus you cant smoke in pubs now which is a lot better.

Not smoked for nearly 4 years now and i was on 40 a day.

Keep an eye on those patches they brought my arm up in big red circles after a while and don't get the 24 hour ones as they can affect your sleep pattern giving you nicotine when you wouldn't normally have some so you lay awake half the night........

In terms of risk to life and limb, I wonder how motorcycling stacks up in the grand scheme of things.

Motorcycling is way different,I've just walked away from a 120mph crash that won't cause me any long term damage (hopefully) yet if I smoked I would be shortening my life expectancy

Both are personal choices and yes both could prove to be fatal but surely that's where the comparissons stop

Unless your speedy and smoke over a bike that's leaking fuel

Well, am in at Boots today at 4pm for our half hour chat and from june 1st me and sarah are going for it this time. Boots supply the stop smoking stuff for free, unlike the NHS who charge. I sat down a few weeks back and scared myself sh1tless with just how much we spend a month on ciggies.

Maybe its time Gaza put up his mobile number on the site for someone we can ring when I start getting stressed to hell.
