Gear problems
Hi took my baby vara down to spikes at blackwater for mot, all great passed no problem, bike has been fine for nearly 2 yrs but last week I had a bit of trouble getting into 1st, I though it was me as I had bought some new boots from Chris Kawasaki in lanner, well today it has got really bad, cant find 1st, jumping out of all gears and finding false neutrals, Its seems a little bit poorly ! Any ideas? I guess it will be down to spikes again !

check oil and (not sure if seperate gearbox oil on varadero) also check chain and sprockets for correct tightness and for wear

Re: Gear problems
Hello , thanks all for your kind replys, Very much appreciated, I am based near lanner, Yes I have changed the oil, all changes are done every 1000 miles as advised by spike and others, it been fine for ages only started happening last week, at first it was just 1st gear I had a problem with but now its all over the place, the engine itself runs fine no noise, just all gone Pete tong !
Re: Gear problems
Yes its a wet clutch oil is both engine and gearbox, friends are suggesting worn gear fork selectors requiring a box split !Kevitree wrote:check oil and (not sure if seperate gearbox oil on varadero) also check chain and sprockets for correct tightness and for wear

Re: Gear problems
Splitting the cases is a last option, as being a twin they'll be vertically split .....
Check chain tension, shift return spring, and if its accessible the shift star and detent spring before you head inside the engine .....
Oh , and for the geographically challenged he's in darkest Cornwall .... ;)

Re: Gear problems
Thanks, chain tension is spot on, not sure about the shift return spring, but when I try to shift down to first it feels like it needs to go further, its not getting that satisfying clunk, I am pretty convinced its the gear change forks, looks like its going to be a split job ! Thanks for all your replys, much appreciated, off to spikes me thinks !
Re: Gear problems
it may not help but i had similar problems my my k1 gsxr and that ended up being the actual gear leaver its slef had got to tight o took it off cleaned it up and was fine after. Just incase it was somthing simple like that.
Re: Gear problems
Sounds pedal/linkage to me.Go for the easiest fix first. Some one may have biffed the lever out of line and not told you?
Re: Gear problems
Thanks, for the suggestion, already checked that, that was my first suspicion but its fine, It Will be the hardest most expensive job, always is for me !zing1100 wrote:Sounds pedal/linkage to me.Go for the easiest fix first. Some one may have biffed the lever out of line and not told you?
Re: Gear problems
UPDATE: Hi guys and gals the Engine is out and almost ready to split, heads are off, just need to get a puller to get the magneto out, I don't suppose any of you guys know what size I will need? It doesn't say anything in the bloody manual (typical)
Re: Gear problems
UPDATE: Just rang Kevin Williams motorcycles at Blackwater, the same guys who do my MOTs and spike said he will bang it off for me so job done, really cannot recommend those guys enough, sound chaps there and really do help out bikers, if you need any work done go there !
