Devon and Cornwall Traffic Police Numbers

Post by ddubya »

The figures showed the largest drop was in Devon and Cornwall, where the number of traffic police fell from 239 in 2010 to 57 in 2014 - a 76% drop.

In the 12-month periods ending March 2012 and March 2013, Devon and Cornwall had no full-time traffic officers.

Good or bad? :| Discuss....

This is a perfect opportunity to compare accident figures when there are fewer police out there on the roads.

Having just got back to riding my personal take on it is that it is a good thing! Long term maybe not.

Don't need them around here. All 20mph limits and cycle paths.
Have you noticed that anyone going slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster is a maniac ?

This was on the news earlier. D&C pointed out the figures are wrong, and there are in fact 170 traffic police. There are also firearms officers who are normally deployed as multirole road traffic police.

I think you see fewer on the main roads nowadays, but I can't say the volume of accidents has increased proportionately. Its just the impact of those accidents is greater - Highways officers are employed to keep trunk road traffic flowing, but the first thing they do is close the road. The number of emergency road/lane closures, and the period of time they last, has increased significantly over recent years.

To my mind let sleeping dogs lie ....... We live in a world of statistics led policing where they easy hit crime to make their solve-rate figures look good. Each traffic camera offence is a crime solved. A camera can record/solve more crimes per hour at less £/hr than any human officer ......
