GCMG

Post by MellowYellow »

I have just, for the first time ever, changed a back wheel. It was diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiisgustingly grotty.

Swapped the wheel and NEW tyre off old girl I complete with rear brake assembly onto old girl II.
'Twas a little bit suck-it-and-see, but it's done.

You knew. Didn't you ?

Haynes says "...and unscrew axle".

Translation...attack it for a couple of hours - give up.

Have a day off

Select a corner where sturdy railings meet at 90°. Rest wheel againt fence, rest outer fork against wall so that it can't rotate. Find 2 old leather belts and strap 'spoke' to railings.

Set torque wrench to max and set undo mode. Carefully balance on wall / fence / torque wrench and gently vibrate body in a vertical plane. Wait...CRACK. Nice or wott ?

Back wheels do get really black. Years ago, I used to have a casual job doing tyres at things where people took their bikes down drag strips and my lovely job was to take the wheels on and off. :-)

Of course. The back one is 'really quite tight' and the front is between 'not too tight' and 'reasonably tight'. Much better than those EU megatons.

First ride tomorow... :-ss
