12 months of hell with my R1

Post by Yamster »

Life lesson learnt with this bike. I bought it just under a year ago and haven't hardly ridden it since. I Bought it from a chap in Birmingham off gumtree and after riding it home, the next day I took it out and it kept stalling on me, Immediately I thought the guy had sold me a bike with major issues. After googling the symptoms I had countless things it could be. I took it to main dealer(Bridge) who replaced the "Throttle Position Sensor" with no joy. I spoke to 3 more yamaha main dealers who could not shed any light on the problem, i now had a list of major problems that could cause this issue. So 3 weeks ago I decided to cut my losses and sell It. I took it to Shane at Speed Motorcycles Exeter. He said he would buy it off me but would rather help me get it sorted. He got me to start it up and he listened to it. "Air filter dirty" he said. Check it out. And blow me down after 12 months of main dealer advise, hours of tinkering in my garage Shane sorted it out, it was just a dirty air filter doh!! My total respect to Speed Motorcycles Exeter and Shane who could have made a killing on buying my bike off me for a song but wanting to help a fellow biker.

The more bikers I speek to that have used Bridge say the same. It's a shame coz it's a good set up there. Just hoping for a dry winter now coz I'm loving my bike.

Always check the service items first (unless a plug in diagnostics points to & resolves a problem).

Plugs, fuel/air filter, valve clearances, even an oil change if transmission related. These things will need doing at some time in that year/ownership so it's no bad thing.

Learnt the same myself, poor starting on a 1000 EXUP, had carbs overhauled, tried different coils/caps - should have checked valve clearances first as despite 28k service intervals, mine had gone tight at 15k miles.
