What's the cost of not having breakdown cover?

Post by Jug »

Just wondering what it would cost for a local recovery if you just gave a garage a call and asked them to come get you.
Anybody know?

Probably a lot more than an annual fee for breakdown cover

I pay about £90 a year that covers the wife and I in any vehicle - bike, car and van - all year, including European travel. Plus home start. That for me, is peace of mind

I've done part-time recovery work for the last 6 1/2 years and have yet to meet anyone who wasn't glad they had it.

One example of cost if you aren't fully covered is a youngster I recovered from Exeter Uni to his home in Bideford about five years ago. He'd taken out the cheapest breakdown cover he could find but it only covered a recovery of his vehicle up to 10 miles from the breakdown spot - he hadn't bothered reading the small print, or ignored it. Either way, his parents had to shell out well in excess of £250.00 to Britannia Breakdown to cover the extra miles - it would be a fair bit costlier now for sure.

Of course, if you're a SWB member with a bike broken down somewhere in the S/W there's always a mate to call on :) . Might cost you a cider or several at a later date mind!

I've never had breakdown recovery and the one time I needed recovery (from M4) it cost me £250 in 2010. Not bad for a lifetime of motoring.
It's not like we live in outer Mongolia.
I suppose you'd call it pay as you go.

When I had the Ford kuga complete disaster broke down twice on the m5 near Birmingham first time the AA cable tied the wiring loom to get us home, 2nd time same fault after 3 weeks in the garage they wouldn’t even look at it took me straight to brum airport for a hire car and recovered the car the next day, money well spent in my opinion 👍👍

I've got personal cover for myself in any vehicle I'm in with RAC. It cost me £60 of Tesco club card vouchers this year - reward points for buying my normal shopping - so effectively free money.
Its no different to any insurance policy - you feel frustrated at the premium every time you pay it, hope you'll never need to use it, but are eternally grateful for it if you do need to make that call :-bd
