GO PRO Mentor wanted..

I got given a GOPRO by the Mrs recently and I am amazed at the quality of the movies iv taken and horrified by the file sizes..

Iv had a go with the editing software but being a bit of a techno fool i'm struggling to get good results.

Is there a kind soul who would offer me a bit of tuition may be over Skype or point me in the right direction of some online advice?

Hi mate - What GoPro are you using and what settings are you filming in? I usually film in 720p + 32fps sometimes 1080p + 48fps for panoramic/slow motion but file sizes are larger and editing software begins to struggle etc. I filmed on three GoPro's (2 Hero 3's & a Hero 2) each day on and off for a week last month and filled 96Gb

It depends on what model you have as to the best film rate. If you have the 3+ Black then you can go full 1080 and 60pfs.

With the go pro video editor the files can be huge, just don't convert them all in one go, instead segment a clip you want then convert it and whilst that is converting you can segment another file. Otherwise, because the files are so large it may be best to have them converted to a separate hard drive that can cope with the massive gb input.

The GoPro shoots in MP4 H.264 as far as I know. The best advice I can give to you is to only convert the part of the videos you want to keep, and throw away the rest. I used MPEG Streamclip to trim my file and re-encode them for editing. It is a free program and really powerful.

I didn't like the included editor, so instead I use some software by MAGIX I picked up in our local PC World. www.magix.com/gb/audio-dubbing/ There are some good free alternatives too like Windows Movie Maker and LIghtworks. Take it slow, and follow those online tutorials and you'll be amazed at what you can achieve!

I would also advise on trimming your clips before converting them, as you probably have a lot of padding in your clips (at the beginning, end etc.) that you don't need. This will later save you time when editing all the clips together, and hard drive Gb space too One program I use a lot is MPEG Streamclip. It is free and outputs to all major formats. I personally don't like the included Go Pro software so I use Movie Edit Pro. For free software, take a look at Windows Movie Maker or Lightworks. Hopefully of use to someone.

- Thanks for all the tips and input fellas. Im getting to grips now and have invested in a couple of big memory external hard drives to store raw data prior to processing.
