Help needed.... Deisel in Ducati!!!

Post by MaxDec10 »

I've just put £8.00 worth of diesel in my 1199s. I rode it for 1.5 miles, it stuttered then I realized and turned it off.. What a [idiot]!!!

Thanks in advance

Get it back home, lift the tank off and fully drain the tank.
Wash out with fresh petrol and if they have a filter in the tank would be worth changing.

Do you have a way of getting home or are you stuck out on the road?
And where abouts are you??

Thanks for the swift reply Ruffian. Luckily after a couple of stutters from the engine I was only half a mile from home so have pushed it back. I've just spoken with GT Motorcycles in Plymouth, they've been really helpful and are collecting it today... Looks like a full tank and system flush, new fuel filter, new spark plugs and worse case scenario new 'o rings'??? I'm not sure what they are or where they are. To be honest, I'd rather go over the top and make sure it's minted.

Prize turd I am!!! lol

That bloody Nitro diesel pump is exactly like the Nitro Unleaded... I've also been driving a diesel car for over 15 years too...

I take it you won't be swinging by Mac D's Hayle tonight then ;)...................

I'm sure GT will have you sorted and back running asap, then we'll attempt to meet up again!

You couldn't script it could ya Badger. Big effin lesson learned today! I've never in 22 years put the wrong fuel, so I decide to do it for the first time with my sparkly new 1199s.

Do you have any experience with this? Happy outcomes usually etc?

Not personally ( touching as much wood as my fingers can cover #:-s ) but I would say Ruffian's got it covered, drain tank, flush with fresh fuel, then stick some redex in the tank when you re fill just to clean the injectors through. I've got carbs so don't know what the procedure is for fuel injection, if you can drain them rather than remove them I would or maybe just spray a load of carb/ injector cleaner into them and then replace tank and run the engine with the fresh fuel. I would replace plugs only if I couldn't clean them with fresh petrol first. If I was doing it myself I'd probably Google it first just to see what the rest of the world says ;) .

Or hang around on here and wait for someone with a more modern bike to tell you the proceedure :D .....

Lots of the time the seals won't need replacing unless been sat in the wrong fuel for a while, (enough time to start seeping in)

As for the plugs the first couple of miles will easily burn off any foreign contamination and wouldn't fuss me.

Don't worry your not the first and certainly won't be the last.
The amount we have done at work. Usually work vans being filled to the brim with wrong fuel.

Thanks fellas... Well the good news is, she went like a rocket for the 30 mins of riding that I managed before I took my head for a shit and filled her with diesel.

The 1199s makes my old 2007 RSV Factory and Honda SP1 feel positively slow in comparison.

At this stage I'm happy with everything GT are saying and confident they'll do a good job. I was very impressed by how quickly they collected the bike considering I'm about 70 miles from Plymouth. The driver was a good guy and couldn't have been more helpful or professional. If they do a good and honest job this time, they'll have a customer for life.

They have floated the potential for a £600.00 Fuel pump though which will give me a sleepless night waiting for the update call tomorrow. :))

If they do ask for the old one back also!!
Stick it on ebay once cleaned through and at £600 if you can get £150 it will soften the blow at least.

I put half a tank of diesel (topped it up so the mix was 50/50) in my honda 650 single once, i rode it home noticed no difference really, it was only the next day when it was cold that it would not start , eventually got it started , rode up the road and it did not run right until i got it hot, then i sniffed the exhaust and smelt diesel , opened tank and smelt diesel , felt a proper twat , went home drained tank and carb , filled with petrol , off it went like a good un , no problems ever since , just bought the first petrol car in 25 years , i am still awaiting the I have put diesel in the car, I never drive the car as i have my Fiesta diesel van

I don't think diesel in petrol is as disaterous as vice/versa, don't people clean things with diesel rather than petrol as it's kinder on seals etc.

I guess as long as it's not got burnt for any length of time coating the cat/sensors in soot it should be ok (I guess diesel cars have sensors & cats too).

Anyway, I thought all Ducatis sound like they run on diesel !!

Diesels are quieter than ducatis now , steam engines definitely quieter

Update....

Report form GTMotorcycles is.... Tank and fuel system flush/clean, new plugs (at my request I admit), No need for O-rings, Fuel filter is a metal gauze and as such cleaned when flushing the system with no replacement required.

Lisa on the workshop desk said she fired up fine, as expected smoked for a few minutes and then ran as normal. It was late afternoon and wet so the tech/mechanic will take her out for a test in the morning and give me a final report. Fingers crossed, we're nearly there and should be back on the road. :D

I've got Termi slips on so I think I've escaped the Catalytic Converter concerns that the standard exhaust would have had...

I've gotta say GTMotorcylces have been brilliant up to now. I know I don't have the bike back yet and in perfect order again but I've been very impressed so far. They have responded quickly, called when they said they would, and all being well will bring the bike back to me on Thursday morning. That's a less than 48 hour turnaround and I'm 70 miles from them.

I'll be happy to sing their praises once I've tested the bike thoroughly and as mentioned before they'll have a loyal customer for servicing and sales. I'm looking to also buy a Diavel X in Jan 2017.

Glad it's not been too bad an experience then.

And the x diavel does look like a great bike.
Did look at the diavel and wanted one but can't really afford one
